The Story of Worthy Earth

Worthy Earth started in 2020 with the humble vision of creating a flourishing market garden on a quarter acre of disused farmland in Martyr Worthy, Hampshire.

Inspired by the Regenerative Agriculture movement, we envisioned and created a no-dig market garden on the land over the Autumn and Winter of 2020.

Since then, we have had two entire growing seasons - selling weekly veg boxes around Winchester and the Itchen Valley. We’ve also built four more market gardens, one based at Dummer Down Farm which will be supplying veg boxes for everyone in the Candover Valley and Basingstoke. Another is at Blenheim Palace which is situated in the colossal walled garden, viewed by thousands of people every year. This year we have also added seasonal blooms and edible flowers grown alongside our organic vegetables. These will be available to purchase weekly throughout the season. All our produce is grown naturally and sustainably without the use of chemicals and pesticides as we are passionate about creating healthy soil and encouraging wildlife, as biodiversity is essential for the future of the planet.

Worthy Earth is our attempt to show how much can be grown on such a small area using no-dig gardening techniques and that it’s possible to supply customers in the local area generously with high-quality produce, whilst reducing our carbon footprint. All our packaging is plastic free and compostable.

We believe that small-scale food production is a solution to the social, economic and environmental crises we face today, and we intend to make our small contribution with Worthy Earth.

Hopefully we can inspire and educate others along the way!

What is No-Dig Gardening?

Plain and simply, it is the process of adding organic material to the soil to regenerate the Earth rather than take away from it. Tilling the Earth with ploughs, rotavators and machinery destroys the micro-organisms and subterranean ecology that makes up the soil - hence the need for tillage farmers to use chemical-fertilisers over time to improve degraded soil.

We source our mulch and organic compost locally and sustainably to create a healthy, nutrient-rich soil. As such, our salads and vegetables have the optimum environment for their development and the Earth is regenerated indefinitely for future generations. It is a mindful and future-oriented approach to small-scale food production.

Why are we different?

We produce on a small-scale for local customers. This ensures we leave a minimum trace on the environment in our food production. We aim to deliver predominantly to customers within a 10 mile radius from our garden, fostering closer relationships and a deeper connection with the natural landscape.

All our produce is seasonal, grown organically and cultivated by hand. Plants nurtured with love and affection by passionate people taste better and are more nutritious to eat. All produce bought from us will be picked and prepared on the day of delivery or collection.

We use no plastic packaging or unnatural substances in our produce whatsoever, because we don’t need to! All produce is grown with the health of the Earth and our customers as top priority.

We leave the Earth in a better condition than we found it. Worthy Earth is a small-scale response to the degrading effects of mechanised farming methods that destroy soil fertility, waste water, emit C02, and use unnecessary plastic packaging.

Ultimately, the Earth is Worthy of our care and adoration.
